Overview

The third Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons will be held from 3 to 7 March 2025 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The dates and location were decided upon by the second Meeting of States Parties at its 10th plenary meeting on 1 December 2023 (see TPNW/MSP/2023/14, para. 24) and confirmed by the intersessional decision 1.

H.E. Ambassador Akan Rakhmetullin (Kazakhstan) was elected as President of the third Meeting of States Parties at the second Meeting of States Parties at its 10th plenary meeting on 1 December 2023.

Officers

President

Amb. Akan RAKHMETULLIN is the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Previously, he served as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations in New York (2022-2024). First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (2022), and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan (2021-2022). He has also served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (2019-2021), Director of the Department of Multilateral Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2015-2019). He holds the diplomatic rank of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Envoy of the I class.

Amb. Rakhmetullin also chaired the UN Disarmament Commission in 2023 and the second session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference in 2024.
